Safe handling and spraying
Crop protection products work only when they are used correctly. The label is the legal instruction for each product, and it overrides any general advice in this guide.
Before you spray
- Read the full label, including the crop, pest or disease, dose, and the minimum days before harvest.
- Check the weather. Avoid spraying in strong wind, rain or heavy heat.
- Calibrate your sprayer so you apply the rate on the label, not more.
- Wear the protective gear the label asks for, such as gloves, a mask, goggles and long clothing.
Mixing
- Fill the tank with half the water first, then add the product, then top up.
- Keep the tank agitated while you mix and while you spray.
- Do not mix products unless the label or a trusted expert says they are compatible.
- Mix only the amount you need for the day. Do not store leftover spray mix.
Storage and disposal
- Store products in their original containers, locked, dry, cool and out of reach of children and animals.
- Keep pesticides away from food, feed and seed.
- Rinse empty containers three times, add the rinse water to the spray tank, and dispose of containers as your local rules require.
Waiting periods
Every product has a pre-harvest interval, the minimum number of days between the last spray and harvest. Respect it so the harvested crop stays within residue limits. Also respect any re-entry interval on the label before anyone goes back into a treated field.
